Tuesday Crustie: Porcupine

One of the problems with doing the Tuesday Crustie features is that it often makes me feel incredibly ignorant. I can’t even hazard a guess at what genus this animal is in.

It’s a brachyuran crab, but that’s as much as I know. But it’s so cool looking, I can’t resist including it.

Looks to me like a member of the King Crab family, Lithodidae. After that the best guess is that it's a member of either the genus Paralomis of Lithodes, but I only say that because they make up a majority of the species in the family. Nice picture, too.

The species is Neolithodes grimaldii it is not a very well known species. It is found throughout the northern Atlantic. It is mostly associated as something that is caught up by accident in turbot fishing nets. Usually found below 3000ft.
